Determinism versus free will is a good example among duality constructs that keeps us busy thinking for nothing.
In fact those are just complementary factors of our human situation:
- On one side, we are in a situation that has been determined through the multitude of past crossed action-reactions.
- On the other side, within that situation there is a fairly large field of possibilities freely available.
Every minute, every breath and every moment there is a 1-0 choice that can alter the outcome of our evolution. And whether we do something or not, is also up to us. There is no obligation, just an available field of possibilities:
We are relatively free within determined circumstances.
THE POINT is not to be bound by either side, but to see clearly the extent of the situation and also the extent of the possibility & freedom within that situation.
IN FACT, the core of the problem seems to be that, as we grow from kid to adult, we have too many choices. To avoid having to choose all the time and bear responsibility, we would rather sit on the sidelines and blame the game or the players… like a crowd watching a football game!
But in the real game of life
-if you play-
neither is the outcome set,
nor can you just do what you want!
